Packaging R&D Manager

Packaging Sustainability

  • Partner with sustainability team to ensure the safety and sustainability of all packaging materials

o The Social Mission team will hold the Packaging RSL and will work closely with the Packaging R&D Manager to validate and review material inclusion/exclusion in RSL.

  • Analysis of packaging sustainability initiatives reconciling with marketing/revenue/supply chain goals; supplier manufacturing capabilities.
  • Responsible for producing a packaging score for each packaging option, using the cross departmental Packaging Scorecard (between Packaging, Product Marketing, and Sustainability)
  • Manage packaging renovations based on agreed upon sustainability initiatives
  • Collaborate with Social Mission and Product Marketing teams on development of five-year roadmap for sustainable packaging

Packaging Design R&D

  • Review alternative market places / engage supplier database to research and present innovations in packaging design

o Areas of focus include alternative dispensing/dosage methods; applicators; new alternatives to traditional packaging formats with a focus on sustainability and material reduction

o New decoration techniques that focus on either innovation, efficiencies (i.e. cost reduction), localization, environmental footprint / material reduction

  • Develop innovation to ensure accounting of mass manufacturing capabilities and cost effectiveness
  • Implementation via packaging development team

Packaging Material R&D

  • Review alternative market places / engage supplier database to research and present innovations in packaging material

o Areas of focus include new resins and materials that demonstrate strategic/sustainability advantages

o Research materials/resins from within and outside of the beauty packaging industry

o Investigate and qualify Post-Consumer Recycled resins, Bioplastics (Sugar, Hemp, etc.) Ocean Waste Plastic and other innovative materials, as alternatives to virgin material.


  • 5-7 years of related experience
  • BS Packaging Engineering, Industrial Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering
  • Requires a high degree of knowledge in packaging component and product manufacturing processes
  • Adept at working independently and provide support to cross functional team
  • Good communication skills; written, oral and inter-personal
  • Ability to handle frequent interruptions and shifting priorities
  • Ability to work independently and employ effective time management skills
