Green Chemist

Beautycounter is looking for a Green Scientist/Chemist with the capability to develop new preservative systems, high purity materials, and innovative alternative to Beautycounter’s “Never List” of prohibited ingredients. 

In this role you will:

  • Research emerging green chemicals and partner with leading green chemistry think tanks and university programs
  • Represent the brand in our partnership with the Green Chemistry & Commerce Council (GC3)
  • Be responsible for safety messaging to support customer inquiries and cross functional teams including product marketing and development
  • Partner closely with Product Development team to provide solutions and alternatives to formulation performance
  • Work with third party testing facilities to test ingredients for possible impurities/contamination
  • Create and manage incidental tracker and establish incidental database through a close partnership with Regulatory and the Global Product Safety team
  • Provide guidance to R&D project teams, Marketing and other internal partners on regulatory matters, recommend options and implement solutions to resolve problems
  • Attend conferences, webinars, and other forums to learn new innovations and alternatives for formulating safer cosmetics

Qualified Candidates will possess:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry or related field
  • 3-5 years’ experience working in the personal care industry or related field
  • A demonstrated familiarity with the Principles of Green Chemistry is vital; certified GreenScreen®For Safer Chemicals Practitioner is ideal but not required
  • Experience conducting chemical reviews for companies, NGOs or government agencies
  • Experience in chemical hazard, exposure and risk assessment of individual chemicals and mixtures is required
  • Strong understanding of a hazard-based approach to managing chemicals
  • Experience using and building databases with complex scientific information
  • Ability to balance of being precautionary and making real-time decisions that bring high-performing products to market
  • Experience using and building databases with complex scientific information
  • Ability to clearly communicate to multiple stakeholders complex information in a clear, confident manner
